Neighbors are special. Some more than others. Growing up, I had (and my parents still have) the Otterbourgs. Cam’s family has the Longs. We have Eva and John.

Last July, one day after we moved into our new house, we heard a knock on the door. There was Eva, our new neighbor, holding a bushel of tomatoes. She insisted we take all of them. This would become a regular occurrence.

Since then, we’ve been somewhat adopted. They call us “Slim” and “Little Bit.” We’ve learned a lot about them, and Eva tells wonderful stories. They run a catering company, own a farm and have an industrial kitchen in their basement. They’ve lived in the neighborhood for thirty years. Today, we sat with Eva and helped her peel apples. Who knows what for, but I’m sure we’ll benefit in some way or another.
